Planning a Caribbean holiday starts with one question — when should I go? The answer depends on what you want from your trip. Here is a honest month by month breakdown of what to expect across the Caribbean throughout the year.
December to April — Peak Season
This is the best time to visit the Caribbean for most travellers. The weather is at its finest — dry, sunny and warm with temperatures sitting between 26°C and 30°C across most islands. Humidity is lower than the rest of the year and rainfall is minimal.
This is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit. Flights and hotels cost significantly more during December, January and February, particularly over Christmas and New Year. Book well in advance if you are travelling during this window. Carnival season also falls in this period — Trinidad's famous carnival runs in February, making it one of the most exciting times to visit Port of Spain.
May and June — Sweet Spot
May and early June offer some of the best value in the Caribbean travel calendar. The peak season crowds have thinned, prices drop noticeably, and the weather is still very good across most islands. Hurricane season officially begins on June 1st but storms are rare this early in the season. If you want good weather, lower prices and fewer tourists, May is arguably the best month of the year to visit the Caribbean.
July and August — Hot and Humid
Summer brings school holiday crowds, higher prices and the beginning of more active weather patterns. It is hot and humid across the region. Hurricane risk increases through August. That said, many islands hold their biggest cultural events during this period — Barbados Crop Over festival runs through July and August and is one of the Caribbean's most spectacular celebrations. If you are travelling with children during school holidays, plan well ahead and monitor weather forecasts closely.
September and October — Peak Hurricane Risk
These two months represent the highest risk period of Atlantic hurricane season. Mid-August through to late October is when the most powerful and frequent storms develop. Travel is not impossible during this time — many trips go ahead without any disruption — but you should only travel with comprehensive travel insurance that covers weather cancellations. November — Transition Month
Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th and by mid-November most of the Caribbean is returning to calmer, drier conditions. Prices are still lower than peak season and the islands are quiet. November is an underrated time to visit for travellers who want value and space.
